All classes except On Water Training are held at the district fire station training facility, 1500 Bollinger Canyon, San Ramon, CA 94583.  From 680 go west on Crow Canyon Road about 1 mile.  Turn left (south) on Bollinger Canyon, and left into the fire station's parking lot. Entrance to the building is ONLY from the Bollinger Canyon side of the building, not through the glass doors facing this parking lot.
  • 8 Week Boating Fundamentals BS&S
    When:  Tuesdays  Jan 22 through Mar 18 2008
    Time: 7:00-9:00PM.

    Topics covered include boat construction, terminology, equipment; safety and legal consideration; and boat operation will be included.  This course constitutes a safe boating class as required by the courts for citations while on the water.

    Passing the short exam at the conclusion of this class entitles you to a certificate recognized by state licensing agencies and Canadian authorities. Many insurance companies give discounts for completing this course.

    Cost $75 including manual

Advanced Topics

This class will be followed by a one day, 8 hour class for the advanced topics of navigation, powering your boat, marlinspike, weather, and communications.  The One-Day session is  planned for Saturday April 05 from 9AM until 6PM.

Cost is $45 and includes lunch.

  • 13 Week Boating Skills and Seamanship
    When:  Not currently offered.  See above for same material.
    Time: 7:00-9:15PM.

    Topics covered include every topic from the 10 Week Fundamentals class above, plus full classes on navigation, marine radios, weather, engine mechanics, medical awareness while on the water, and knots.  This course constitutes a safe boating class as required by the courts for citations while on the water.

    Passing the short exam at the conclusion of this class entitles you to a certificate recognized by state licensing agencies and Canadian authorities. Many insurance companies give discounts for completing this course.

  • About Boating Safely (ABS) (was America's Boating Course (ABC))
    When: Self study course: Anytime.  Cost: thirty-five dollars.
    When: Classroom:  One day class, May 17, July 12 and Sept 20,  2008, 9 to 6; lunch provided.  Cost: forty-five dollars.

    This course is a text based fundamental course in safe boating practices and federal law.   It is designed as a self study program or a one day classroom presentation.  In addition to the text, you meet with our instructor for an hour review of state boating laws and a Coast Guard Auxiliary administered test.  The certificate you receive upon successful completion earns discounts from many insurance companies, and constitutes a safe boating class as required by the courts for citations while on the water.

    Families are encouraged to attend or study together for a common understanding of safe practices and boating laws.

  • On the Water Training (OWT)
    When
    : 9 AM to about 4 PM Saturday June 21 or August 2, 2008
    Where:  Emery Cove Marina, Emeryville CA

    Description:  This is a one day class onboard the boats of the CG Auxiliary.  It is an introduction to boating issues encountered on the water and is not a substitute for a hands on boat handling class.  Students will handle pre-departure and departure tasks (weather check, launch, dock lines, checklists, safety briefing, fueling), underway tasks (lookout, meeting, crossing & overtaking situations, sound signals, aids to navigation including day marks and buoys),  man overboard, emergencies, anchoring, and returning tasks (fenders and lines, dock approach, securing, trailering, checklists).

    Recommended
    that you complete a Boating Safely, BS&S, ABC, Sailing, or comparable class prior to this course, but this may be waived.  See listing above for these classes.

    Requirements:
    You must complete a Health Questionnaire.  Your answers may limit your participation in certain tasks. You must sign a liability waiver.  In the event of a mishap apply to your insurance company for coverage.  You must be physically able and of an age to safely participate in the OWT.  Our boat coxswain determines you meet all applicable requirements, including the above requirements, on the day of the training.

    Bring your sun lotion, deck or tennis shoes (no hard soles!), life jacket if you have one, and layered clothing.  We will provide a sack lunch since we do not know where we will be at that time!  Ahh, the thrill of it!

  • GPS for Mariners
    When:  One evening, Tuesday June 3 or October 14, 2008
    Time: 7 - 9:30 PM

    This course will include a refresher on the basics of navigation, components of the GPS system, advanced GPS procedures and techniques as well as tips on utilizing multiple information sources to validate the GPS. Techniques of track line, waypoint, proximity waypoint, route, and nearest waypoint navigation are covered.  Chart plotters and charting systems are touched upon.
  • Free nautical charts from NOAA will be discussed.

    Class recommended for those considering the purchase of a GPS as well as long time users. Materials include sources of shareware software linking the GPS to a PC to chart and manage waypoints and routes.

    Cost: Twenty Five dollars includes text (GPS for Mariners)

  • Basic Navigation
    When
    : Seven weeks on Tuesday nights starting Dec 2, 2008
    Time:  7:00 to 9:30 PM

    This 7 week class is recommended for boaters who might get caught on the water by fog or darkness, who plan to travel along the coast.  It covers most of the theory (chart construction, L and LO, magnetic variation and deviation, speed/time/distance, determining a fix, and DR plotting.  The last night will consist of the test and graduation.

  • Advanced Navigation
    When:
      Eight weeks, follows Basic class above
    Time:  7:00 to 9:30 PM


    This class requires you completed basic navigation (see above). It covers topics such as M-board, radar and vector math.  It includes a comprehensive practice exercise.  The exam for this part covers charting and developing information based on charting a cruise.

    Cost: TBD
